The Catalyst
The Aranya Niran Rosewood Foundation blossomed from the heart of Overseas Traders, a third-generation family business supplying acoustic and electric guitar makers globally. Having worked with Dalbergia latifolia for over 40 years, we recognized the urgent need to give back to the species that has given the music world so much.
CITES & Science
In 2016, the Dalbergia genus was listed in CITES Appendix II. This pivotal moment revealed a stark scarcity of scientific data regarding the natural regeneration of East Indian Rosewood. Fueled by a profound interest in securing the species' future, we initiated independent field studies and reforestation efforts.

The 2016 Appendix II listing of the Dalbergia genus raised questions about the status and regeneration of Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia).
IWST study commissioned by Overseas Traders, Forest Based Solutions and other supporters
Overseas Traders, Forest Based Solutions and other supporters financed a study through IWST. It found relatively few young rosewood trees compared with mature trees in the selected forest areas, with grazing, fires and invasive vegetation among the challenges. This was a turning point for Overseas Traders
From concern to action: ANRF established
ANRF was established, and more than 2,000 rosewood saplings were planted on its farmland at Sannavalli, Mundgod.
A stronger programme: Partnership and capacity building
The Yamaha Corporation partnership brought funding and expertise; Dr. Kartik A.G. strengthened ANRF’s scientific and operational capacity.
From farm to forest
The tripartite MoU between ANRF, IWST and the Karnataka Forest Department enabled work towards conservation in natural forest settings.
Implementation and learning
Seed sourcing, the nursery, baseline surveys, three pilot plots and the first forest enrichment planting show how the programme is taking shape.
